Costume, Hair and Make-Up: Kayvon

Performance

Kayvon is the frontman of the band so we wanted him to stand out from us a bit. He is wearing black skinny jeans, Doc Martin boots, a blue shirt with all the buttons done up and some wristbands. Doc Martins are quite popular and look good. The black boots and shirt also match his hair as well as the majority of the things on the set. The shirt is smart but still quite casual and having the top button done up is very typical of indie artists. The wristbands are just there to make him look a bit more interesting and add a subtle bit of colour to his look. We kept his make-up simple, covering the imperfections in his skin with some foundation. We didn't need to do anything with his eyes as they are already dark and will look good on camera. His hair is dark and short. This look is smart and pretty normal as unusual haircuts aren't very common in indie music.

This outfit is more casual that his performance outfit but still not as casual as me and Alice as we wanted him to stand out as the lead. His hair and make-up are the same as in the other setups.

Kayvon is wearing a plain white t-shirt, blue skinny jeans and black Vans. This is a very simple but good look that is common and relatable. His make-up and hair are the same as in the other setups.

Kayvon is wearing a green checkered shirt with dark skinny jeans and Doc Martin boots. His green shirt stands out from the grey and black clothes that me and Alice are wearing and the look is very indie and quite formal. His hair and make-up are the same as the other setups.

Kayvon is wearing a brown shirt with black skinny jeans and Doc Martin Boots. Again, this stands out from the light colours that me and Alice are wearing in this shoot and is quite a smart indie look. His make-up and hair is the same as the other costumes.

Performance

We wanted to make Alice aspirational to our female audience by giving her quite an individual look that isn't necessarily typical of females in the music industry. She is wearing ripped skinny jeans, black converse, a black crop top and a checkered black and white open shirt. This is quite similar to what much of our female target audience may dress like but it isn't too casual and is visually quite interesting on camera. Her make-up is fairly subtle, with foundation to cover the imperfections in her skin. She is also wearing eye shadow, mascara and eyeliner to make her eyes looks bigger and more striking. We straightened her naturally curly hair a bit as we wanted to make it look styled and a bit longer.

Alice is wearing a grey jumper with a black top underneath and a black strap visible on one shoulder, as well as blue jeans and black canvas shoes. This look is simpler than the performance outift and the pattern on the jumper keeps it interesting. Her make-up is simple, bringing out her eyes and making her skin clear, and her hair is natural and casual.

Alice is wearing a plain blue shirt with a white t-shirt underneath, blue skinny jeans and dark canvas shoes. This outfit is very simple and not typically 'feminine' but it's quite indivual and the nice light blue shade looks good. Her hair and make-up are quite natural. She is wearing foundation, eye shadow, eyeliner and mascara, although she has less than in the performance shots as we wanted a more natural look.

Alice is wearing a loose grey top with a black skirt, tights and black converse shoes. This isn't too formal but it looks nice. Her hair is simple and her make-up is natural, bringing out her eyes and making her skin clear.

Alice is wearing a white top with blue rolled-up jeans and black converse shoes. This is a very simple look that is quite indie and not stereotypical feminine. It is also not as smart as Kayvon looks for this shoot and the colours match what I am wearing. Her make-up is simple and natural and her hair is straightened a bit so that it doesn't look too casual.

Performance

I wanted to look smart but not as smart as Kayvon as he is the frontman of the band and needs to stand out. We decided on a white shirt with dark blue skinny jeans and addidas trainers. I also wore some wristbands as this is fairly typical of indie artists and the Reading Festival wristband may be recognised by members of the target audience who also went to the festival, giving them something else to relate to. My make-up is simple and quite subtle, covering imperfections in my skin and bringing out my eyes and eyebrows. My hair is short and fairly simple as indie bands don't normally have particularly crazy hairstyles.

Props

I am wearing a white t-shirt with a print on it, black jeans, blue addidas trainers and wristbands. This look is very casual and simple, while the print on the t-shirt stops it from being boring. My make-up and hair are the same as in the other setups.

I am wearing a dark navy jumper with an aztec pattern across the chest with black skinny jeans and addidas trainers. This is quite a simple look but the pattern adds interest to the outfit. Pattern jumpers are also fairly typical in indie music. My make-up is the same, making my skin look clear and bringing out my eyes. My hair is the same as the other setups.

I am wearing a grey paisley shirt with black skinny jeans and blue addidas shoes. This is a different look to the jumper but it is equally typical of the indie genre and is smart without being too formal. I prefer it to the jumper as it looks nicer against the grey background and is a bit more subtle. My hair and make-up are the same.

I am wearing a white t-shirt with a blue open shirt over it, dark skinny jeans and brown shoes, as well as the same wristbands that I wear in the other setups. This is a casual but indie look that is quite summery. The colours match Alice's costume for this setup and the whole look is more casual that Kayvon's, making him the focal point of all the images. My hair and make-up are the same as all the other costumes.

Kit List

• Canon 5D Mark II DSLR Camera - This camera gives a clear, high-resolution image and is lightweight and versatile. We felt it was ideal for our project.
• 24mm-105mm Canon L Lens
• Ball Head tripod (Manfrotto 546B with 504HD) - We used this for all of our stationary shots. We found it easy to use and had lots of useful features like a spirit level to ensure the camera was not tilted.
• Glidecam camera mount - We used this camera mount for some of our moving shots. It is very lightweight but quite difficult to use.
• Shouldermount - This was a good alternative to the Glidecam. It is heavier but the shots were more steady and looked better.
• 50 Inch playback monitor - This was very useful for checking the framing of shots as a group and playing back footage. Any flaws were much more noticeable on the large screen than on the Canon 5D Mark II's screen.
• Arri 1000K Lights with colour filters - The colour filters were obviously vital since the coloured backgrounds are a major part of our video.
• Leapfrog lighting desk - This desk was quite easy to use once we learned how it worked. It also allowed us to save lighting setups which saved us a lot of time and is a really useful feature.
• Studio audio playback - This was obviously vital since we needed to hear the song as we performed. The playback could go very loud which was useful for me because it meant I could hear the song over the drums and keep in time.

 

One problem with our equipment was the the camera's sensor had a very small piece of dirt or dust on it. This meant that all of our footage has a little blurred circle in the top-right half of the image. We didn't have time to fix this issue and had to work with the camera as it was. This is only a very minor problem and the smudge is barely noticeable but it is still there. Ignoring this small flaw, we are very happy with the footage that the Canon 5D Mark II is able to capture.

 

 

 

Meetings Summary: November 3-7

This week was a bit hectic as it was the last week before we started shooting our video. We had to make sure everything that we needed on Saturday was ready. This mainly meant finishing all of our research and planning and blowing up the hundreds of balloons that we needed. We also cut up the tissue paper to make our confetti and started bringing in other costumes and props that we would need later on. We also started to work on planning our publicity shots and brainstormed ideas about framing, costumes, props and poses, inspired by our previous research into publicity shots

 

Shoot Board

After finishing the storyboard, we started creating a shot list so that we could then create a shoot board. We organised all of the shots into four setups as shown below. This made it much easier to create a good shoot board and ensured that we didn't miss any shots.

Alice then used this list to organise all of the shots in a shoot board that could be used in our shoots for reference and organisation. Each row contained information about the shot as well as a very rough visual representation of what it was that we were trying to achieve.

We used a template for the shoot board to save time. The template has a column for time but we chose not to fill this out because we didn't want to stick rigidly to a schedule as we may feel rushed and we thought it would be much better to do a few shots well than to have lots of mediocre shots. We have plenty of time for extra shoots and we figured it would be quicker to shoot everything once than to rush everything and then have to do it again later.

Shoot Schedule and Call Sheet

Mahalia created these documents so that everyone involved in the project would know when they are needed. As well as this, the documents show what is being done in each session and what props are needed.

 

Studio Schedule

There are 5 groups using the studio. This obviously means that it has to be shared throughout the project. A schedule, (shown below), was made to allocate time in the studio for each group.

 

It was difficult to find free time in our schedules that we all shared within the group as we all do different subjects and Kayvon and Mahalia do quite a few activities outside school. We mostly fitted the schedule around free periods that we share and media lessons.

 

We are shown in blue. We have some good lenghty slots. In particular, the Saturday slot is very useful because we have lots of time and are all there for the entirity of the shoot as opposed to some other slots where one of the group members are missing for some of the allocated time. We have planned our shoots so that we get group shots done in slots where we are all present, (such as the band performance shots), and individual shots done in the slots where some people are missing, (such as the MCUs of the individual band members).

 

 

Casting

Pilgrim is  3-piece band that consists of Kayvon, Alice and myself on lead guitar, bass guitar and drums respectively. We kept everything within the group to make scheduling and organisation easier. The chemistry between the characters in the video will hopefully be more genuine as we are all good friends within the group.

Kayvon Nabijou

Kayvon is the most confident out of the three of us. He is our singer and guitarist in the band. In our preliminary task, he was cast as the lead singer. He played the role very well so it would be silly to not take advantage of him for our video too.  The short video below shows him in this lead role.

 

Kayvon's character is cool, confident, stylish and charismatic.

 

He has three different costumes throughout the video and one make-up look.

 

 

Alice Cahill

Alice is the bassist in our band. She has experience acting from our preliminary task and can play guitar so her performance should be confident and convincing. Having an aspirational female figure in our band breaks conventions and appeals to a wider audience, broadening our appeal.

Alice's character is a quirky, aspirational tomboy.

She has three costumes and two make-up looks.

Gavin Fraser

It is hard to have a convincing drummer in a video if the actor doesn't actually play the drums. Luckily, I do. This is one of the main reasons that I have been cast as the drummer for Pilgrim. I was also the drummer in the preliminary task, although my role is more important in this video than it was in the preliminary task as our band interacts more than the band in our remake did, meaning I had more of a background role in the remake. I can play the song confidently so playing convincingly won't be a problem in the video.

 

My character is cool, confident, laid-back and funny.
